Ned Lautenbach

Leadership Circle

For the past five seasons, Ned Lautenbach has served as chairman of Artis—Naples’ board of directors. When he assumed the role, the organization had recently hired a new CEO and was working to reverse years of lackluster financial results. Attendance was lagging. But after having served on the search committee that hired her, Ned knew he and Kathleen van Bergen could make a difference and change course.

“We had no museum director,” he says. “We had no music director, no CFO, no development director, no marketing head. There was really a lot of work to be done.”

Ned says he looks at where the organization is now and feels a sense of pride. He and the board hired Andrey Boreyko to become Music Director. He supported Kathleen as she assembled a team of arts and non-profit professionals to put in place systems for success. And he led the charge in the decision to change the name to Artis—Naples. The results prove it was the right choice. Attendance is up, dramatically so for some series. The organization is cash positive and has a balanced budget under its belt. The artistic success has been unparalleled for a community our size.

“The Vienna Philharmonic played in two places,” he says. “Carnegie Hall and Artis—Naples. Think about that.”

Ned says he is particularly proud of the educational component of the organization, noting the nearly 46,000 students who participate in some Artis—Naples-affiliated program each year.

It’s Ned’s belief that Artis—Naples is what sets Naples apart from other similar communities. That’s why he got involved in the first place. It’s safe to say that Ned’s term as board chairman has been instrumental in guiding the organization to where it is today, poised for amazing growth thanks to the Future—Forward campaign.

“Ned has been a tremendous guiding force, sounding board and counselor to me these past five years,” Kathleen says. “Artis—Naples owes him a debt of gratitude that will take generations to repay.”
