Dennis Turner can’t say for sure that without Artis—Naples he and his wife, Dee, would have retired somewhere other than Naples. After all, they had narrowed their search first to the US (after spending most of their married lives in Europe), and then to Florida. Then it was definitely to be Florida’s west coast.
But after being swept up in London’s classical music scene 40 years earlier, the idea of having access to a world-class orchestra was certainly the decider.
“We stayed here for a month in March of 2002,” Dennis says. “And we went to several orchestral programs. That’s when the love affair with Artis—Naples was born.”
In the eight years since the couple has made Naples their full-time home, the pull of the organization, and in particular the orchestra, has grown stronger. Dennis describes the “natural progression” as regular attendees to enthusiastic supporters to musician underwriters, which the couple became in 2013.
The Turners, in underwriting violinist Jennifer Kozbial Posadas, weren’t looking to support a specific instrument. Rather, when the time came to choose a member, they met Jennifer and felt immediate rapport. “The relationship we’ve built with Jennifer and her husband, JT, was a real bonus,” the couple notes. “We went in having decided to more actively support Artis–Naples and ended up with a lovely friendship. Really, it’s the icing on a wonderful cake.”
That cake includes learning about the aspirations and careers of orchestra members, getting to know the people who make Artis–Naples the success it is today, meeting world-renowned artists who come to perform with the Naples Philharmonic and becoming close friends with many other underwriters. “I haven’t seen a member of the orchestra or a donor socially since yesterday,” Dennis says jokingly. “It’s extremely rewarding. We believe that in becoming involved like this you definitely get far more out of it than you give.”
