Nancy and George Woltz

Leadership Circle

For Nancy and George Woltz, Artis—Naples is a foremost reason for making Naples their Florida home. A campus that provides visual and performing arts deserves not only the necessary financial support but the hundreds of volunteer hours that are given freely.

“You have to really commit if you want to see the organization flourish,” she says.

Nancy and her husband, George, are certainly just that — committed. They’ve been committed to the arts since they met as art students in college. Their careers took them in different creative paths. George was responsible for one of the most famous ad campaigns of all time — Virginia is for Lovers. Nancy ran a nonprofit artist residency program that attracted everyone from students to a Virginia Supreme Court Justice.

They bought their first Naples home right as construction was underway on Hayes Hall. When The Baker Museum opened, Nancy was one of the original docents. She has now given thousands of tours to students and her contemporaries alike.

“I tell people, ‘Don’t tell me you don’t like it until I’ve had a chance to explain the art,’” she says of her docent role. “Then, if they don’t like it, well we can have a different discussion.”

On the board of Friends of Artis—Naples, Nancy chairs the education committee, which aims to broaden opportunities for people to learn more about the arts. And as part of the Future—Forward capital campaign, the couple donated a Hans Hofmann painting — the museum’s first.

But perhaps Nancy’s dedication to the mission of Artis—Naples is nowhere more evident than in her newest enterprise — Sense and Sketch. The multidisciplinary art program has invited eight local high school students with strong artistic talent to experience rehearsals by the Naples Philharmonic. While the musicians perform the music, the students work on original art inspired by what they are hearing. The works will be judged and auctioned off this month at the Friends’ spring gala.
