A Model for Matisse
Film screening and lecture
With special guest appearance by
Barbara Freed, director and lecturer
Professor of French Studies/applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University
This award-winning documentary details the friendship between Henri Matisse and Sister Jacques-Marie, who inspired the artist to create one of his greatest masterpieces. Afterward, filmmaker Barbara Freed will talk about
the film and do Q&A.
As a Professor of French and Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Barbara Freed’s research interests extend in two diverse but complementary directions. The first relates to second language learning and use within a broad socio-cultural context in the US and elsewhere in the world. The second, quite distinct but not unrelated, centers on social art history with a particular focus on the lives, interactions and work of artists who made the French Riviera their home during the first half of the 20th century.
