Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic

Dr. Silvia Kargl, Historical Archivist, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Dr. Friedemann Pestel, Historian, University of Freiburg/Germany

Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday in 2018 is a most welcome opportunity to celebrate the unique partnership of the Vienna Philharmonic and its first American-born conductor. For this occasion, the Vienna Philharmonic’s management charged Vienna Philharmonic’s archivist Silvia Kargl and Friedemann Pestel, historian at the University of Freiburg/Germany, to do research in the orchestra’s archives as well as in the Bernstein collection at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and other places.  In their lecture, they will highlight the significance of Bernstein’s collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic, spanning over 24 years with 197 concerts. New research highlights the difficult way to the first concert in 1966, Bernstein’s relation with Austrian politics, his tours with the orchestra as well as projects unrealized due to his death in 1990. Most of the photos from the Vienna Philharmonic’s archives will be presented to the public for the first time.

Ambivalent Loyalties

The Vienna Philharmonic between National Socialism and Post-War Austria

Dr. Silvia Kargl, Historical Archivist, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Dr. Friedemann Pestel, Historian, University of Freiburg/Germany

The Vienna Philharmonic occupied a special position under the Nazi regime: a private association in a cultural-political environment that imposed repressive rules of institutional and ideological conformity. In order to preserve its self-administrative structures, traditions and performance capacity, the orchestra actively cooperated with the Viennese Nazi authorities after the integration of Austria into the German Reich in 1938. In their lecture, Kargl and Pestel present these new findings in relation with the research already undertaken over the last years. Embarking on the question as to how the Vienna Philharmonic’s Nazi past has become an issue of public and international controversy since the 1980s, they focus on the orchestra’s principal actors under the Nazi regime, shed light on victims of racial and political persecution and discuss the orchestra’s ambivalent relationship to the Viennese Nazi administration.
