Asian Art and History: Behind the Silks
Artis—Naples Lifelong Learning

Dr. Xiaoqing Diana Lin, Associate Professor of History, Indiana University Northwest

The political climate in China became increasingly dangerous following the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. Charlie Soong foresaw the need to send his daughters to safety as well as to provide for their higher education. The three daughters, Ai-ling, Ching-ling and May-ling, have played influential roles in the politics, economy and history of modern China. Their education at Wesleyan College prepared each of them for an important destiny. The legacy of the Soong sisters is still felt the world over.

This lecture will be followed by lunch and a discussion with the lecturer that is included in the ticket price. This presentation is part of the Asian Art and History lecture series.

Xiaoqing Diana Lin

An associate professor of history at Indiana University Northwest since 1994, Xiaoqing Diana Lin has taught a wide range of courses, from modern Asian histories (China and Japan) to Western-civilizations surveys.

Lin’s research has focused on modern Chinese intellectual and cultural history. In her monograph Peking University: Chinese Scholarship and Intellectuals, 1898-1937 (2005), she examined how ideas from the West or from Chinese history were modified or changed in the construction of the first modern Chinese university. In her book Feng Youlan and Twentieth Century China, an Intellectual Biography (2016), Lin discussed how Feng’s search for a framework of Chinese philosophy that is open and connected to foreign learning continues to be an important goal for Chinese philosophy today. Lin has also published multiple book chapters and journal articles on modern Chinese cultural and intellectual history.
