Mined and Unmined Cole

Michael Lasser's American Music
Artis—Naples Lifelong Learning

Rather than writing every kind of song such as Irving Berlin did, Cole Porter concentrated with uncommon wit and inventiveness on comic list songs which highlighted his ingenuity and irreverence, while his haunting love songs brimmed with eroticism and romance. With his precise focus, even Porter’s forgotten songs are often as good as his most famous. Here’s a chance to remember and rediscover Cole Porter, a true national treasure.

Join Michael Lasser, American musical scholar and coauthor of America’s Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley, for two programs that celebrate American life through the work of two of our most beloved creative voices — Cole Porter and Yip Harburg. As architects of the Great American Songbook, Porter and Harburg provided timeless classics which today still resonate as distinctly American.

This presentation is part of Michael Lasser's American Music lecture series.
