About the Program
Michael Lasser—American Music
The Gershwins’ New York
George and Ira Gershwin embodied New York City at a time when New York City embodied America. The songs they wrote are rooted in both the experiences of ordinary people and the driving rhythms of 20th century urban life. This Lifelong Learning program is a perfect compliment to Artis—Naples’ presentation of The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess.
Teacher, broadcaster and critic Michael Lasser is the co-author of America’s Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. A study of more than 300 classic American songs, the book illuminates the ways in which great songs meld words and music into a seamless whole. Lasser is currently writing America’s Songs II: From the 1890s to the Post-War Years, which will be available Christmas 2013.
