About the Program
Michael Lasser—American Music
Norman Rockwell and Irving Berlin
Norman Rockwell described America to itself. Irving Berlin did the same. Through images and songs, American music scholar and author Michael Lasser looks at the work of both men through six decades of the twentieth century—from the Jazz Age to the Depression to World War II and beyond.
Teacher, broadcaster and critic Michael Lasser is the co-author of America’s Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. A study of more than 300 classic American songs, the book illuminates the ways in which great songs meld words and music into a seamless whole. Lasser is currently writing America’s Songs II: From the 1890s to the Post-War Years, which will be available Christmas 2013.
