Dale Chihuly is a multimedia artist known for pushing the boundaries of glass and revolutionizing the American studio glass movement. The Baker Museum is the permanent home to four of his dynamic large-scale installations, which are on view to museum visitors during all normal operating hours.

Chihuly installations at The Baker Museum include the iconic Red Reeds, which emerges from a reflecting pool in Norris Garden just outside the museum’s main entrance. The museum’s newest Chihuly acquisition, Red Reeds consists of 145 individual reed-like forms and made its Naples debut in 2020 as part of the exhibition Dreaming Forms: Chihuly Then and Now.

Stepping inside The Baker Museum lobby, visitors are greeted by the monumental Blue Icicle Chandelier, which consists of 377 blown glass pieces, weighs more than 1,000 pounds and measures 35 feet tall. Created specifically for the museum’s lobby, this towering work of art is suspended from the ceiling of the third story and can be enjoyed from various perspectives as visitors ascend or descend the main staircase.

Connecting the two halves of The Baker Museum’s third floor is Chihuly’s dazzling Persian Seaform Ceiling, which spans a 51-foot hallway and consists of more than 1,028 pieces of blown glass. This installation creates a colorful environment evoking Chihuly’s appreciation for Byzantine art, Venetian glass and the Art Nouveau aesthetic.

The west galleries of Hayes Hall are crowned by the massive Red Chandelier, which weighs over 2,000 pounds. Each of the elements that compose the piece is unique; they reflect light in various ways and create a swirl of energy in its surrounding environment.

Together, these four major installations evince not only Chihuly’s artistic rigor, but also his continuous investigation of contemporary themes and forms while honoring and reinvigorating traditional glassmaking techniques.

Please note that our Chihuly installations may be off view periodically due to temporary gallery closures or inclement weather. Contact Patron Services at 239-597-1900 prior to your visit with any questions.
