Iris Fanger, Ph.D., lecturer
The Diaghilev Ballets Russes, 1909-1929, became the crucible for collaborations that launched the careers of many 20th-century artists, notably Michael Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Leonide Massine, Bronislava Nijinska and George Balanchine on the dance side; painters Leon Bakst, Nicholas Roerich, Pablo Picasso and Georges Roualt; and composers Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev, among many others. The lecture will include a discussion of several of their works, augmented by films of some of the ballets which remain in the repertories of companies the world over.
