Shakespeare—From Page to Stage
Noises, Sounds and Sweet Airs

Artis—Naples Lifelong Learning

Kate Lechler, Ph.D., Adjunct Instructor in English, The University of Mississippi

Kate will discuss the music and magic in The Tempest. This play contains one of Shakespeare's most musical characters, the spirit Ariel, whose magic is inextricably intertwined with performances of music and song. How does Ariel's music calm, frighten, or seduce the human characters lost on the island? How would these songs — and the magic they accompany — have been performed on the Shakespearean stage? And how are they performed today? In addition to listening to early versions of these songs, we will also watch clips from Julie Taymor's and Derek Jarman's adaptations of the play, among others.

This presentation is part of Kate Lechler's Shakespeare—From Page to Stage series.

To ensure the health and safety of our patrons, Artis—Naples has established procedures for your visit to the Kimberly K. Querrey and Louis A. Simpson Cultural Campus. Please review our COVID-19 Protocols for detailed guidance about our enhanced safety protocols.
