American conductor Lee Mills makes his debut with the Naples Philharmonic in a program that highlights the beauty and energy of dance music. Bernstein’s uplifting Symphonic Dances from West Side Story includes all of the power, jazz and fun that made West Side Story one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century. The program also includes virtuoso French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing Tango Manos, a new piano concerto by American composer Aaron Zigman. In addition to thrilling concert works, Zigman is perhaps best known for his romantic scores to The Notebook and Sex and the City: The Movie.

Lee Mills

Resident Conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and winner of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award in both 2014 and 2017, Lee Mills is internationally recognized as a passionate, multifaceted and energetic conductor. He was recently appointed the Douglas F. King Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony.

He has led performances with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra that have been hailed as having a “sonority of unequalled liveliness and quality,” working alongside such artists as Simone Porter, Conrad Tao, Eliane Coelho and the Smetana Trio. His conducting engagements outside of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra include the National Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Starting as Assistant Conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in September 2014, he was promoted to Resident Conductor after only 18 months. In 2017 Mills was selected as a semifinalist in both the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition and the Opera Royal de Wallonie-Liege International Opera Conducting Competition. In 2014, he conducted alongside David Robertson in the highly acclaimed U.S. Premiere of John Cage’s Thirty Pieces for Five Orchestras with the Saint Louis Symphony.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet

Jean-Yves Thibaudet

For more than three decades, Jean-Yves Thibaudet has performed worldwide, recorded more than 50 albums and built a reputation as one of today’s finest pianists. He plays a range of solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire. From the very start of his career, he also delighted in music beyond the standard repertoire, from jazz to opera, which he transcribed himself to play on the piano.

Thibaudet’s recording catalogue of more than 50 albums has received two Grammy® nominations, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Diapason d’Or, the Choc du Monde de la musique and the Edison Award, as well as Gramophone and Echo awards. On his Grammy-nominated recording Saint-Saëns, Piano Concerti Nos. 2 and 5, he was joined by Dutoit and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. His other recordings include the jazz albums Reflections on Duke: Jean-Yves Thibaudet Plays the Music of Duke Ellington and Conversations with Bill Evans.

Thibaudet has also had an impact on the world of fashion, film and philanthropy. He played Aaron Zigman’s soundtrack for Wakefield and was soloist in the award-winning scores for the films Atonement (which won an Oscar for Best Original Score) and Pride and Prejudice, and recorded Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack for the 2012 film Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet was born in Lyon, France, where he began his piano studies at age 5 and made his first public appearance at age 7. At 12, he entered the Paris Conservatory to study with Aldo Ciccolini and Lucette Descaves, a friend and collaborator of Ravel. At age 15, he won the Premier Prix du Conservatoire and, three years later, the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York City.
