Israeli conductor Asher Fisch makes his debut with the Naples Philharmonic in a program featuring two significant works by Beethoven and Brahms. Written shortly after Beethoven’s home city of Vienna surrendered to Napoleon after a siege, Beethoven’s grandiose and heroic “Emperor” Concerto reaffirms the beauty and power of art.

A renowned conductor in both the operatic and symphonic worlds, Asher Fisch is especially celebrated for his interpretative command of core German and Italian repertoire of the Romantic and post-Romantic eras. He conducts a wide variety of repertoire from Gluck to contemporary works by living composers. Since 2014, Asher Fisch has been the principal conductor and artistic advisor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO). His former posts include principal guest conductor of the Seattle Opera (2007-2013), music director of the New Israeli Opera (1998-2008), and music director of the Wiener Volksoper (1995-2000).
Highlights of past seasons include guest engagements with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Teatro Massimo Orchestra in Palermo. Guest opera engagements included Il Trovatore, Otello, Die Fliegende Holländer and Andrea Chénier at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Arabella and Hansel und Gretel at the Semperoper Dresden; Tannhäuser at the Tokyo National Theater; and Cristof Loy’s new production of Capriccio at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
Born in Israel, Fisch began his conducting career as Daniel Barenboim’s assistant and kappellmeister at the Berlin Staatsoper. He has built his versatile repertoire at major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House at Covent Garden and Semperoper Dresden. Fisch is also a regular guest conductor at leading American symphony orchestras, including those of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Philadelphia. In Europe, he has appeared at the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, among others.
Fisch’s noteworthy recordings include tenor Stuart Skelton’s first solo album, recorded with WASO and released on ABC Classics in 2018, and a recording of Ravel’s L’heure espagnole with the Munich Radio Orchestra, which won Limelight Magazine’s Opera Recording of the Year in 2017. In 2016, he recorded the complete Brahms symphonies with WASO, released on ABC Classics to great acclaim. His recording of Wagner’s Ring Cycle with the Seattle Opera was released on the Avie label in 2014. His first Ring Cycle recording, with the State Opera of South Australia, won 10 Helpmann Awards, including Best Opera and Best Music Direction. Fisch is also an accomplished pianist and has recorded a solo disc of Wagner piano transcriptions for the Melba label.
Jonathan Biss is a world-renowned pianist who shares his deep curiosity with music lovers in the concert hall and beyond. He continues to expand his reputation as a teacher, musical thinker, and one of the great Beethoven interpreters of our time. He was recently named Co-Artistic Director alongside Mitsuko Uchida at the Marlboro Music Festival, where he has spent 12 summers.
As 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, approaches, Biss continues to add lectures to his online course until he covers all the sonatas in time for the anniversary year. At the same time, he progresses in his nine-year, nine-disc recording cycle of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas, which will also be completed in 2020. His bestselling eBook, Beethoven’s Shadow, describing the process of recording the sonatas and published by Rosetta Books in 2011, was the first Kindle Single written by a classical musician. These projects represent Biss’ complete approach to music making and connecting his audience to his own passion for the music.
