Tchaikovsky — Piano Concerto No. 1
Sibelius — Symphony No. 2
Enjoy an evening of Scandinavian magnificence as Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu conducts the Naples Philharmonic in a performance featuring Ciel d’hiver by prominent contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho — one of four female composers featured in the Masterworks series this season — as well as Jean Sibelius’ bold and daring Symphony No. 2. Written at the turn of the 20th century as his native Finland began to resist the controlling influence of occupying Russian forces, Sibelius’ Second Symphony resounds with national pride. The program also includes Tchaikovsky’s passionate and beloved Piano Concerto No. 1 performed by internationally acclaimed pianist Conrad Tao, a child-prodigy-turned-virtuoso described by New York Magazine as “the kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music.”
Prelude at 7pm
Join the conductor before the performance for an insightful 30-minute prelude discussion about the program.
