Local dancers from Naples Ballet, professional soloists from Boston Ballet, and the musicians of the Naples Philharmonic bring Tchaikovsky’s timeless tale to life in this enchanting performance. Follow Marie and her beloved nutcracker on their enchanting journey from a battlefield of voracious mice and valiant gingerbread men, across a moonlit winter landscape and into a dazzling land of sweets!
The Naples Ballet is a nonprofit organization dedicated to setting new standards for artistic excellence, providing the art of ballet as a component of education and promoting cultural enrichment and awareness of the art of dance within the Naples community.
The company aims to provide dancers of all ages with performance opportunities that meet expert standards of artistic development, to instill professional values and qualities through art education and to offer free professional dance instruction through scholarship funding while serving as a training ground for local dancers possibly seeking professional careers in dance or related fields.
Radu Paponiu is the Associate Conductor of the Naples Philharmonic, having previously served for two years as Assistant Conductor, and director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. During the 2018-19 season, he conducted the Naples Philharmonic in nearly 20 different classical, education and pops programs.
Radu recently completed his Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied with Hugh Wolff. While in Boston, he was also conductor apprentice with the Handel and Haydn Society, assisting Harry Christophers and Richard Egarr. For two consecutive summers, Radu furthered his studies in conducting at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, Colorado, where he worked with Robert Spano, Leonard Slatkin, Larry Rachleff, Patrick Summers and Federico Cortese. Additionally, Radu has completed both a Bachelor of Music degree and an Artist Diploma degree in violin performance at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he studied with Robert Lipsett.
Radu has appeared as guest conductor for concerts with the Naples Philharmonic, the North Carolina Symphony, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra and participated in a conducting workshop with the New World Symphony led by Michael Tilson Thomas. He has served on the conducting faculty for the Juilliard School Pre-College Division in New York, and he has also served as cover conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
