Radu Paponiu is the Associate Conductor of the Naples Philharmonic, having previously served for two years as Assistant Conductor, and director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. During the 2018-19 season, he conducted the Naples Philharmonic in nearly 20 different classical, education and pops programs.
Radu recently completed his Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied with Hugh Wolff. While in Boston, he was also conductor apprentice with the Handel and Haydn Society, assisting Harry Christophers and Richard Egarr. For two consecutive summers, Radu furthered his studies in conducting at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, Colorado, where he worked with Robert Spano, Leonard Slatkin, Larry Rachleff, Patrick Summers and Federico Cortese. Additionally, Radu has completed both a Bachelor of Music degree and an Artist Diploma degree in violin performance at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he studied with Robert Lipsett.
Radu has appeared as guest conductor for concerts with the Naples Philharmonic, the North Carolina Symphony, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra and participated in a conducting workshop with the New World Symphony led by Michael Tilson Thomas. He has served on the conducting faculty for the Juilliard School Pre-College Division in New York, and he has also served as cover conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
James Cochran is the founder and director of the 80-voice Naples Philharmonic Chorus as well as resident organist of the Naples Philharmonic and director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Chorus. James has performed as an organ recitalist in the US, Canada, Great Britain and Mexico. He has served as a collaborating pianist for singers Hermann Prey, Seth McCoy and Michele Byrd.
James’ performances with the Naples Philharmonic include the Rheinberger Organ Concerto in G Minor, Dupré’s Organ Symphony in G Minor, Handel’s Concerto in F Major, Toccata in F Major from Joseph Jongen’s Symphonie Concertante, the Poulenc Organ Concerto and the Saint-Saëns “Organ” Symphony. James has prepared the Naples Philharmonic Chorus and the Naples Philharmonic Youth Chorus for performances under the batons of Christopher Seaman, Erich Kunzel, Keith Lockhart, Clotilde Otranto, Donald Pippin, Richard Zielinski, Keith Brion, Jeff Tyzik, Bruce Hangen, Jack Everly, Stuart Chafetz, Jorge Mester, Andrey Boreyko and Yaniv Segal.
James holds a master’s degree and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and he is listed in the International Who’s Who in Music. He is also the director of music at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church.
