Hooray for Hollywood
Race in Film — Part Two

Artis—Naples Lifelong Learning

Rick Harris, lecturer

For decades, American film confirmed and embodied the unequal treatment of black Americans. As complicated as this story is, there is no doubt it is one with a remarkable cast of the famous and the infamous: D.W.  Griffiths, Sidney Poitier, Spike Lee, Tarzan, Lena Horne, Stepin Fetchit, Vincente Minnelli, King Vidor, Lorraine Hansberry, Denzel Washington and many others. Films illustrated will include Birth of a Nation, Do the Right Thing, Sounder, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Moonlight, Boyz in the Hood and many others that typify a too-easily disregarded part of America’s film history.

This presentation is part of Rick Harris' Hooray for Hollywood series.
