James Ehnes, internationally acclaimed violinist and longtime artistic friend of Artis—Naples, makes his first appearance of the 2022-23 season in this opening concert of the Wang Chamber Music series, featuring a program of romantic and contemporary works. Ehnes joins musicians of the Naples Philharmonic in a performance of Dvořák’s String Quintet in E-flat, which was intended to be “really melodious and simple” as a musical keepsake from the composer’s stay in the American Midwest. In addition, Ehnes performs Ysaÿe’s Solo Violin Sonata No. 3, “Ballade,” one of six solo violin sonatas written for and dedicated to Romanian violinist Enesco. Naples Philharmonic woodwind players also perform living Black composer and flutist Valerie Coleman’s Afro-Cuban and Santeria-inspired Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet.

The Wang Chamber Music series is generously sponsored by David* and Cecile Wang.
