The Explore Florida! series offers stimulating day trips to exciting museums, exhibitions and private collections. Previous outings have included visits to St. Augustine, Winter Park, Coconut Grove, Miami and Palm Beach. Join Friends of Artis—Naples as we prepare for these trips:
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens and Boca Raton Museum of Art
We begin at the beautiful Morikami in Delray Beach. The gardens, named Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew, were designed to be a living exhibit complementing the art museum. Its six distinct gardens are inspired by famous gardens of Japan. In addition to a docent tour of the gardens and the art museum, we will enjoy a Japanese Bento box lunch at the garden (specific location to be determined). Then it’s on to the Boca Raton Museum for a special exhibition, Imagining Florida: History and Myth in the Sunshine State. Travelers will also have an opportunity to view the permanent collection and the newly renovated sculpture garden. December 13, 2018.

The Revs Institute: The Art, Design and Engineering of the Automobile
The Revs Institute is the premier destination to study and explore one of the largest archives of automotive history. The exclusive Collier Collection of the finest vintage automobiles and ever-expanding library of rare books, photographs, documents and ephemera uniquely catalogues the evolution of automobile design and the industry’s influence on modern culture. We will have a docent tour of the entire facility. This morning event will be followed by lunch and a lecture from a leading restorer and/or designer. January 18, 2019.

NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale and Intracoastal Cruise
This day-trip to Fort Lauderdale’s NSU Art Museum will focus on an exhibition of Renoir’s influence on American Impressionist William J. Glackens. NSU is home to the William J. Glackens Research Collection and Study Center. Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator, will present an overview of this exhibition to our group. Following a delightful lunch, we will take a tour of the fabulous Fort Lauderdale harbor and Intracoastal Waterway by boat, with views of extravagant homes and yachts. January 31, 2019.

Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki and Everglades City
This exciting trip into Florida’s past begins with a tour of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, where we will learn about the only undefeated Native American tribe in the US. We will then enjoy an exciting airboat ride. Then it’s off to Everglades City for a visit to the Museum of the Everglades to view the exhibition Skunkapes, Scalawags and Swamp Spirits, Legends and Lore of the Everglades and be guided on a history tour of Everglades City. We will have lunch at a delightful waterfront restaurant. February 12, 2019.

Miami Architecture: Pérez Art Museum, Miami and Miami Beach Art Deco
We begin with an in-depth architectural tour of the Pérez. This tour includes a behind the scenes look at this remarkable building and the galleries’ fabulous art. Then, it’s on to a delightful lunch followed by a docent tour of Miami architecture with our favorite guide, Dr. Paul George, who has led tours of historic Calle Ocho and the Miami River. Venice Architecture and Photography
Venice, Florida, is a planned residential city designed by the famous city planner John Nolen. We will tour examples of Spanish Revival architecture from the 1920s and ’30s as well as some stunning examples of mid-century modern. After lunch at a delightful local restaurant, we will have a private tour of famed Florida photographer Clude Butcher's dark room and studio. April 10, 2019.

Artis—Naples has recently joined the Museum Travel Alliance. Donors of Friends of Artis—Naples at The Baker Museum and Leadership Circle are eligible to take advantage of this benefit. The Museum Travel Alliance (MTA) provides donors of participating museums with access to unique, high-end cultural travel programs. Travelers will be joining others affiliated with other participating museums from across the country on MTA tours.
