Terumasa Hino
Influenced by Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, trumpeter Terumasa Hino has long been one of Japan’s best jazz musicians, renowned for his hard bop style and contributions to the international jazz scene. A professional since 1955, Terumasa grew up in a musical family in Tokyo and started playing trumpet at 9 (he also plays the flügelhorn).
In 1967, Terumasa made his debut as a bandleader with the album Alone, Alone and Alone, followed by collaborations such as the 1968 Hino-Kikuchi Quintet with pianist Masabumi Kikuchi. After moving to the U.S. in 1975, Terumasa’s star began to rise thanks to his Enja recordings, earlier albums made available domestically by Catalyst, Inner City, Blue Note and his work with Gil Evans, Jackie McLean, Dave Liebman and Elvin Jones.
Throughout his career, Terumasa has explored diverse styles from fusion to acoustic jazz, releasing over 50 albums as a leader, including notable works like Journey Into My Mind (1974), City Connection (1979) featuring Randy Brecker and Nana Vasconcelos and Aftershock (2011) with DJ Honda. Returning to Japan in the 1980s, he adopted the cornet for more acoustic sounds amid the neo-bop revival, while continuing to tour Europe and the U.S.
