Cinematheque Stories “Gadg” The Films of Elia Kazan
David Garonzik, lecturer
Delve in to the groundbreaking films and controversial life of Elia Kazan, one of the most influential directors in American cinema. Known affectionately as “Gadg,” Kazan brought a raw emotional intensity and psychological realism to the screen that redefined acting and storytelling in Hollywood. From A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront to East of Eden and A Face in the Crowd, the lecture examines how Kazan’s work helped shape the Method style of acting and how his films captured the tensions of postwar America, class conflict, identity, ambition and moral compromise with a boldness that still resonates today. The lecture also examines Kazan’s complex legacy, including his controversial testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee — and how it continued to mar his reputation long after his death.
