Experience a program of musical storytelling and striking virtuosity as acclaimed pianist Yekwon Sunwoo brings a performance rich with emotional depth and technical brilliance. The prizewinning pianist opens the evening with Schumann’s vibrant Davidsbündlertänze, which embodies the composer’s contrasting artistic approaches. Chopin’s luminous Barcarolle follows, evoking the gentle sway of Venetian waters. The second half of the program unfolds with the elegant and intricate counterpoint of Bach’s masterful Partita No. 2 and culminates with Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli—a thrilling showcase of artistry and drama perfectly suited for Sunwoo’s mastery of the keys.

Yekwon Sunwoo has been hailed for his “unfailingly consistent excellence” (International Piano) and celebrated as “a pianist who commands a comprehensive technical arsenal that allows him to thunder without breaking a sweat” (Chicago Tribune). A powerful and virtuosic performer, he also, in his own words, “strives to reach for the truth and pure beauty in music.”
The first Korean gold medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Sunwoo’s 2024-25 season includes appearances with Ann Arbor Symphony, New York Classical Players, Colorado Springs Philharmonic and Armenian Symphony, as well as recitals at the University of Michigan, Bechstein Hall and Carnegie Hall.
He has previously performed as a soloist with the Munich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev, Royal Danish Orchestra with Thomas Søndergård, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, National Orchestra of Belgium, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra; among others. Recital appearances include Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Salle Cortot, Hong Kong Arts Festival and a tour of Japan. An avid chamber musician, Sunwoo has also collaborated with numerous acclaimed musicians.
Born in Anyang, South Korea, Sunwoo began learning the piano at the age of 8 and made his recital and orchestral debuts in Seoul at 15. His teachers include Seymour Lipkin, Robert McDonald, Richard Goode and Bernd Goetzke.

Founded in 2016 by Milana Strezeva and Raniero Tazzi, Grand Piano Series is a nonprofit concert and education organization that seeks to enrich the cultural life of the Southwest Florida community with memorable concerts by international artists of the highest caliber, along with a dynamic program of community outreach for all ages, including programs for over 6,000 students each year in Collier and Lee County schools.
