Lecture
Hooray for Hollywood Food, Glorious Food
Part One
Rick Harris, lecturer
From 1925’s The Gold Rush — in which silent film star Charlie Chaplin makes soup from his own shoe — to The Menu’s satire of luxury dining culture, food has played a meaningful role in cinema since its beginnings. Whether used as a vehicle for comedy and satire or to stir emotion, food’s role connects us to the kitchen, characters and narratives in ways that are not immediately evident. Join Rick Harris as he uses clips from movies like Big Night, Babette’s Feast and more to show how food helps movies feel more real.
This presentation is part of Rick Harris' Hooray for Hollywood series.
