Exhibition Lecture Mapping Waterways Through Art & Science

Christopher Daly, Ph.D., assistant professor, Coastal Geomorphology
Lauren Rosenthal McManus, featured artist, The Long View

Join Christopher Daly, Ph.D., assistant professor of coastal geomorphology at Florida Gulf Coast University, and The Long View featured artist, Lauren Rosenthal McManus, in a dynamic panel discussion that will investigate the intersections between Daly’s research tracking coastal geomorphology and storm impacts and McManus’ collaborative, multimedia representations of rivers and watersheds. Daly and McManus will discuss the similarities and differences in their research processes and the meaningful interactions between fieldwork, citizen science and the visual arts.

This presentation is part of the exhibition The Long View: From Conservation to Sustainability | Works from the Bank of America Collection.

All museum lectures and public programs of The Baker Museum include same-day admission to The Baker Museum.

Christopher Daly

Christopher Daly is an assistant professor of Coastal Geomorphology in the Marine and Earth Science Department at Florida Gulf Coast University. He obtained his master’s from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, in 2009 within the Erasmus Mundus Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) Program, which also allowed him to spend time in Norway and Spain as part of his study program. He completed his Ph.D. in 2013 at the University of Bremen, Germany, within the INTERCOAST Graduate College, which also allowed him to spend a year conducting field research in New Zealand. Daly’s research interests lie at the intersection of the fields of physical oceanography and coastal geology, specifically looking at the morphodynamic evolution of beach, barrier island and reef-lined coasts. He also conducts fieldwork and uses remote sensing techniques to gather hydrodynamic, bathymetric and topographic datasets. He joined FGCU in 2022 and is currently studying storm impacts on the Southwest Florida coast and sediment transport pathways around reef-lined coasts in Jamaica.

Lauren Rosenthal McManus

Lauren Rosenthal McManus’ watershed maps reframe the boundaries that define community. Combining research-driven activism with material essentialism, her river-centric maps emphasize the innate beauty and universal importance of freshwater systems. Her work is on permanent display in several institutional collections, including the Nurture Nature Center and the Charlotte Museum of History. She holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she was an urban livability fellow.
