Guitarist and composer Pat Metheny has been redefining the sound of jazz for more than five decades. He first burst onto the international scene in the 1970s with vibraphonist Gary Burton, quickly displaying a trademark style that blended the loose, flexible articulation of horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility — a way of playing that was modern in conception yet deeply grounded in the jazz tradition of melody, swing and the blues. With the release of his debut album, Bright Size Life (1975), Metheny reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players.
Over the years, Metheny has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Milton Nascimento and David Bowie. The only artist ever to win Grammy Awards in ten categories, he has earned twenty in total, along with three gold records, induction into the DownBeat Hall of Fame and recognition as an NEA Jazz Master. A true innovator, Metheny continues to explore new technologies and sonic possibilities, remaining one of the most influential and visionary guitarists of the modern era.
