Once a niche medical procedure, egg freezing is now a billion-dollar industry that promises women the ability to pause their biological clocks and extend their reproductive choices. For some, it’s a path to empowerment; for others, it’s a costly gamble in an unregulated system. Through the experiences of three American women navigating the process, Thaw examines the realities behind the growing trend — who has access, who profits and what’s at stake.

To date, only a small fraction of egg freezers have returned for treatment. For those who successfully get pregnant, the technology can be a miracle — a priceless reward for investing in their fertility years ago. For others, it can be a shocking disappointment. Today’s egg freezing patients don’t know which outcome they’ll face until years later, when their eggs are thawed and fertilized — and when they may run out of other options.
