Jolene takes a job in the coal mines of rural Kentucky — the exact job her father did before he died. Because of where she lives, Jolene must stay in the closet. While her identity is not illegal, it is heavily frowned upon. Accepting her circumstances — and the duty of providing for her family — Jolene takes the job with the understanding that she must keep certain sides of herself hidden. As the story unfolds, Jolene’s life becomes one of sacrifice, hiding her love and working in the mines to feed and house her family. Even though she is still figuring out her own life, the responsibility of caring for her younger sisters rests squarely on her shoulders. At heart, A Woman’s Work is a character study of sacrifice, identity, family and responsibility.
