Aubrey Flint is a meticulous, solitary translator and painter of model soldiers for whom Christmas is less a season of joy than an annual invasion. Haunted by the childhood loss of his mother at Christmas, Aubrey has built a life around routine, history books and a miniature Napoleonic army that asks nothing of him beyond the occasional fresh coat of paint.
After an encounter outside his flat lands him in trouble, Aubrey is sentenced to community service at a retirement home fighting to survive. There, he meets an energetic and eccentric group of residents who enlist his help in staging an amateur production of A Christmas Carol. As rehearsals spiral into chaos, unexpected friendships begin to form and memories Aubrey has long kept buried start to resurface.
With the future of the home in jeopardy and the production hanging in the balance, Aubrey must decide whether to retreat once again into his carefully ordered private world or open himself to the messy, unexpected possibility of connection, forgiveness and Christmas.
