April 19, 2014 — July 6, 2014
This exhibition from The Baker Museum’s permanent collection presents paintings, works on paper and other media by 20th century American artists who were profoundly attracted to coastal subjects. From dramatic sunsets and peaceful beaches to racing schooners and city harbors, The Sea in American Artdemonstrates these modern artists’ engagement with maritime themes for their diverse artistic possibilities. The almost 10-foot long Titanic model at the center of the gallery evokes the dramatic events of 1912 when the now-infamous ship sank on its way to New York Harbor.
A complement to The Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America, this exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on the significance of the sea in American art and history.
This exhibition has been organized by The Baker Museum, Artis—Naples.
