The Schrenk Student Photography Institute is an intensive photography program aimed at highly motivated Collier County high school students. Each year, a class of up to 20 students is selected to participate. The program consists of four weekend workshops during the academic year and a two-week seminar in June. The primary instructor for the Photography Institute is J. Tomas Lopez, M.F.A., Professor of Photography, and Director of Electronic Media at the University of Miami.

The institute is designed to give students broad experiences in various areas of photography, including the camera, lighting, composition, digital technology and portfolio preparation. The program also assists students in making vocational decisions, understanding visual communications and preparing for college-level image-making with a curriculum that emphasizes the craft and aesthetic of visual problem-solving equally.

A student’s first two years in the program are concentrated on technical and formal excellence with the third year dedicated to the student’s individual areas of interest and building a college-level or exhibition portfolio.

Now in its eighth year, this wide-ranging photography exhibition features 97 works created by students participating in the institute.

The institute and this exhibition are generously underwritten by George and Wynnell Schrenk.
