The Masterworks series opens with Artistic and Music Director Alexander Shelley leading the Naples Philharmonic and celebrated pianist Yeol Eum Son in Beethoven’s storm-lit Third Piano Concerto, followed by the weight and resolve of Brahms’ monumental First Symphony.

Alexander Shelley and the orchestra are joined by America’s most recognized clarinetist, Anthony McGill, to perform Gabriel Kahane’s lyrical exploration of love and empathy before the program turns to Stravinsky’s boldly colorful and rhythmic mythic ballet score The Firebird.

Acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming and premier baritone Thomas Hampson join Alexander Shelley and the orchestra for a joyously varied program featuring Beethoven’s overture to his lone opera, Shostakovich’s sardonic Ninth Symphony and three scenes from Nixon in China, John Adams’ operatic fusion of jazz, big band and wry political theater.

Alexander Shelley conducts a program built around two contrasting Beethoven symphonies. Beginning with this revolutionary and most famous work, the Fifth Symphony, the storminess of the opening half subsides in the Pastorale, a five-movement depiction of peaceful countryside scenes interrupted by a brief yet powerful thunderstorm.

Jake Runestad — A Silence Haunts Me
Beethoven — Symphony No. 9

The final Masterworks program devoted to Beethoven sees Alexander and the orchestra welcoming four celebrated vocalists—along with the Naples Philharmonic Chorus—for Jake Runestad’s touching choral reflection on Beethoven’s struggle with deafness before turning to the Ninth Symphony, his monumental finale that shattered the traditional symphonic form.

The penultimate Masterworks program of the season sees Franco-British conductor Stephanie Childress make her Naples Philharmonic debut, joining the “classically trained garage band” Time for Three and the orchestra for Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto 4:3 before closing with Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, inspired by the composer’s travels in sun-soaked Italy.

Holst — The Planets

Alexander Shelley and the Naples Philharmonic close out the Masterworks series with Britten’s brilliant Spanish-influenced violin concerto, framed by two works inspired by deep space: Holst’s innovative orchestral suite, The Planets, and Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s Primal Message, which imagines how a musical missive to distant life might sound.


Music and Museum All Masterworks tickets include same-day admission to The Baker Museum. Museum hours on day of performance: 10am-7:30pm. In addition, the doors to Hayes Hall open 90 minutes prior to these performances. Arrive early to enjoy the exhibitions and light fare available at Heidi's Place.

Masterworks Preludes Join the conductor before the performance for an insightful 30-minute prelude discussion about the program. Masterworks preludes begin at 6:30pm.

Why Subscribe?

First choice of seating

When you subscribe to a series of Artis—Naples performances, you have first choice of seating at the guaranteed lowest price. Order a subscription series in advance of single-ticket sales and you secure your seats for each of your programs in the series. You will never miss a performance because it sells out.

No exchange fee

Subscribers may exchange tickets for any performance for another performance during the season, starting with our subscriptions exchange week in September. You can exchange tickets with no exchange fees.

Priority access to additional season performances

Subscribers also have priority access to additional season add-on performances that are announced after the season begins.

Purchase additional seats at a discount

Have guests coming to town? Need an extra seat for one of the Naples Philharmonic’s programs? Not a problem! Subscribers can purchase additional seats at a discount. But order early; prices increase based on demand.

Priority upgrades of your seats

As a subscriber, you have first choice of the most desirable seating in Hayes Hall and Daniels Pavilion. In addition, subscribers are among the first to receive priority upgrades on their seats. If you would like to be closer to the action or reserve a Gold Circle Box for a special night out, you can put your request in for the upgrade. If seats are available, you will be given priority over other single-ticket buyers.
