Jeff L. Rosenheim will discuss the remarkable life and career of New York street photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009).

This presentation is part of the exhibition Helen Levitt: In the Street.


A professionally administered negative COVID-19 rapid antigen or PCR test, along with a valid matching photo ID, is required for all visitors 12 and older. In lieu of a negative COVID-19 test, voluntary proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, along with a valid matching photo ID, may be presented. Masks are encouraged, and are required for Community Day and for children between the ages of 2 and 11 for all programming. Masks are required for all patrons for the touring Broadway productions of Come From Away and Tootsie. Masking protocols for all other Broadway productions will be announced at a later date. Jeff L. Rosenheim joined The Met in 1988 and has been the Joyce F. Menschel curator in charge in the department of photographs since 2012. The author of 10 books on Walker Evans, Rosenheim is the steward of the Walker Evans Archive, which the Metropolitan acquired in 1994, and the custodian of the Diane Arbus Archive acquired in 2007. He has lectured extensively in the U.S., Western Europe and South America and curated shows featuring a wide range of artists including Evans, Arbus, Carleton Watkins, Thomas Eakins, Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. In his more than 30 years at The Met, Rosenheim has also curated many thematic exhibitions, including the award-winning Photography and the American Civil War (2013) and, most recently, Photography’s Last Century: The Ann Tenenbaum and Thomas H. Lee Collection (2020). Rosenheim has a B.A. in American studies from Yale University and an MFA in photography from Tulane University.
