Crochet Jam
with artist Ramekon O'Arwisters
Ramekon O’Arwisters, artist
This free drop-in event is an embracing and inclusive workshop for all ages and backgrounds. Crochet Jam, hosted by sculptor Ramekon O’Arwisters, uses the folk-art tradition of crocheting strips of fabric into free-form and organic soft sculptures to foster social interaction, creativity and liberation. There are no rules and no patterns. Crochet Jam is an opportunity for play, experimentation and allowing the material to transform naturally without any expectations. This art-making event is meditative, liberating and empowering.
No attempt is made to dictate the creative process and there is no focus on the finished product. Basic instruction in crochet will be provided during the event.
Ramekon O’Arwisters started Crochet Jam in 2012 with the goal of engaging the public to think differently about the role of art within community and the power of art within society. He has since led Crochet Jams at numerous museums and community spaces throughout the country. O’Arwisters’ vision for this event is rooted in his cherished childhood memories, steeped in the African American tradition of weaving in a calm and nonjudgmental environment, without rules or limitations.
This drop-in workshop takes place from noon-3pm in the John and Jeanne Rowe Performance and Learning Center. Ramekon O’Arwisters is also delivering an artist talk related to his work as part of The Baker Museum Lecture Series. This workshop is part of the exhibition Tradition Interrupted.
