The major touring exhibition The Art of Food takes an expansive view of the varied meanings of food, but in Southwest Florida, these questions have additional local relevance. Located within Collier County, the community of Immokalee is responsible for producing 90% of Florida’s tomatoes and is also the birthplace of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food Program. This internationally lauded program protects the human rights of farmworkers, stabilizes the workforce for growers and allows retailers to participate in a system that eliminates supply chain labor abuses.
The Face of Immokalee is a public art project created through a multi-year collaboration between the residents of Immokalee, Florida, and Naples-based photographer Michelle Tricca. Consisting of large-format black-and-white portrait photographs of Immokalee residents of varying ages and backgrounds, the project celebrates the individuality of the members of this community best known for its agricultural contributions.
