Beethoven’s Serenade
Naples Philharmonic Sypert Salon Chamber Music
Musicians of the Naples Philharmonic
Beethoven — Serenade in D Major, Op. 25
C. Kreutzer — Clarinet Trio, Op. 43
Beethoven had a funny bone, and patrons will hear it in the witty and carefree Serenade in D Major — one of two works performed by musicians of the Naples Philharmonic in this playful program.
Composed in 1801 to help a friend’s fledgling publishing business and indulge the growing appreciation for informal outdoor music among Vienna’s elite, the D Major Serenade does not introduce big ideas or require its audience’s intense attention. Lighthearted and simple, this is music made to entertain or enjoy.
Except for his Septet for Wind and Strings and his Clarinet Trio, featured in this program, Conradin Kreutzer is a mostly forgotten Beethoven contemporary. The Clarinet Trio, however, is a delectable work filled with catchy melodies, captivating harmonies and surprising tonalities that lead to an upbeat and toe-tapping finale.
