Musicians of the Naples Philharmonic perform two watershed works in this vibrant program, pairing a mature statement from Haydn with an early work by Beethoven that reveals his emerging voice in chamber music. The program begins with Haydn’s inventive String Quartet, Op. 76, No. 1, notable for its orchestral-style opening, lively interplay among the four instruments and flashes of the composer’s characteristic wit. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Septet, one of the most popular works of his lifetime. Scored for an unusually large chamber ensemble, this six-movement serenade balances charm and technical demands, capturing the composer on the cusp of the more dramatic and storm-charged style soon to follow.
