Anna Clyne — Strange Loops
Tchaikovsky — Souvenir de Florence
This Wang Chamber Music program begins with Anna Clyne’s Strange Loops, a work for clarinet and string quartet which made its world premiere in the spring of 2021. Known as one of the most accomplished compositional voices today, Clyne uses Strange Loops to “explore musical loops — motifs and gestures that repeat, morph, modulate, and recapitulate in various guises.”
Canadian violinist and Artistic Partner James Ehnes leads the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. In this piece, Tchaikovsky remembers a city he adored by crafting music that bursts with love and joy. Reflective and somber at times, yet still full of hope, this is an intense and exhilarating work. Stirring the heart with hope, Souvenir serves as a fitting close for this program.
The Wang Chamber Music series is generously sponsored by David* and Cecile Wang.
