Musicians of the Naples Philharmonic

Taneyev — String Trio in E-flat Major
Shostakovich — String Quartet No. 2

Great chamber works from two Russian composers highlight this program featuring musicians of the Naples Philharmonic. The performance begins with Sergey Taneyev’s String Trio in E-flat Major and concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 2.

The afternoon opens with Taneyev’s String Trio in E-flat Major, a paradigm of Taneyev at the peak of his powers. Known as a master of polyphonic composition, Taneyev demonstrates his capabilities and rhythmic invention in this uplifting and effervescent work. His exacting craftsmanship and unrivaled technique shine through, making this trio a delightful and invigorating piece.

The program concludes with Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 2, a standout among his 15 string quartets. Although composed during the turbulent times of WWII and Soviet oppression, this quartet does not directly reflect the external chaos. Instead, it is a dark, powerful and, at times, dissonant work, showcasing Shostakovich’s ability to convey profound emotion and complexity.

The Wang Chamber Music series is generously sponsored by David* and Cecile Wang.
