Edouard Duval-Carrié (b. 1954) is an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Miami. He has helped redefine and promote contemporary Haitian and Haitian diasporic art, underscoring the island's place in the Caribbean's colonial past and its legacy in the region's diaspora. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Duval-Carrié fled François “Papa Doc” Duvalier’s regime with his family to reside in Puerto Rico, New York, Montreal and Paris before settling in Miami.
Duval-Carrié’s distinctive work, rooted in an artistic movement called Haitian Indigenism, merges the iconography of the sacred Haitian tradition of Vodou with references to the tropical vegetation of Haiti's natural environment. Drawing inspiration from myth, oral history and historical fiction, his work brings to life the complexities of Haitian culture and history. Duval-Carrié questions the official memory of the Haitian Revolution and its key figures by constructing alternative histories out of the experiences and points of view of ordinary people. His work also chronicles contemporary events, such as the earthquakes that have devastated Haiti.
The works included in this exhibition, dating from 2011 to 2021, highlight several of his principal subjects: Tropical landscapes, imaginary portraits, historical narratives and botanical illustrations. Visitors can glimpse Duval-Carrié’s range of techniques and materials: His alchemist-like material experimentations and his storyteller’s genius for decolonizing Haitian history through magical, dreamlike visual language.
Duval-Carrié earned his B.A. from Loyola College in Montreal, Canada, and later attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. He has exhibited extensively in major museums in the Americas, Africa and Europe. In 2022, his new engraved mirror series, The Black President, was on view in Kassel, Germany, as part of Documenta 15. His works are housed in numerous museums around the world, including Pérez Art Museum Miami and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico.
