Musicians of the Naples Philharmonic shine in a vibrant program of early chamber music, spotlighting works by two of America’s earliest composers and culminating in a romantic masterpiece by Felix Mendelssohn.
The concert opens with John Antes’ Trio No. 2 for Two Violins and Cello. A pioneering figure in American music, Antes was not only the country’s first luthier but also one of its earliest chamber music composers. His writing — elegant, balanced and conversational — gives equal voice to each instrument. The program continues with J.F. Peter’s String Quintet No. 1 in D Major. A contemporary of Antes and prolific composer of sacred music, Peter’s chamber works are captivating and filled with expressive color and curiosity.
The afternoon concludes with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor. Widely regarded as his first fully mature quartet, it is a richly emotional work that channels the energy of new love and pays tribute to Beethoven, Mendelssohn’s greatest musical influence.
