Nicario Jiménez-Quispe (Quechua) is a Naples-based Andean retablo master. Retablos are handmade, colorfully and meticulously painted, three-dimensional works with handcrafted figurines. Jiménez-Quispe’s retablos are examples of retablos ayacuchanos, from the Ayacucho region in the Peruvian Andes, a tradition recognized by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture as Cultural Heritage of the Nation for its historical and cultural significance. The artist learned this ancestral practice through his father and grandfather, continuing a lineage that merges Indigenous artistry and customs with Spanish colonial legacy.

Jiménez-Quispe honors this custom and Andean cosmovision while expanding it by incorporating current sociopolitical commentary. His retablos demonstrate the enduring vitality of this form within a contemporary, global context. By addressing themes such as migration, identity and lived experiences, his work continues a tradition that transforms the retablo from a primarily devotional object into a dynamic mode of storytelling.

This installation is organized as a compact retrospective, offering a view through Jiménez-Quispe’s range of retablo shapes, styles and themes. In addition to his familial training, he studied at the Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga, Perú. His work is included in public and private collections across the United States, including the Loyola University Museum of Art, the Museum of Us, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution.
